Running the House of Flowers in 2012
The cost of living in Kabul is shockingly high. Prices of essential goods such as food and fuel continue to rise, nearly doubling in recent years, making the expenditures budget balloon and also requiring that staff salaries be increased to keep pace with the cost of living.
In 2002, our house rent was $300 a month, and the highest paid staff member made only $100 a month, a good salary at that time. Even with food, medical, clothing and energy costs, the average expenses for the House of Flowers were around $1400 per month.
Today, rent for the House is $1300, the highest salary of our eight staff members is $250 a month with all salaries totalling $1700, and food and essential operating costs are approaching $1700 per month.
This means that as of January 2012, the House of Flowers needs $5000 a month to provide 24 hour care and education for 30 children. This comes to $60,000 a year.
