April 2010, The Spiral of Love Continues

Mostafa Vaziri was in Kabul this past April, and his letter describing his time with the children is below. But what he didn't write about was the state of affairs in Kabul. Streets are barely recognizable from a year before, he said, with buildings surrounded with thick, high concrete walls; entire streets are barricaded out of fear of bombings. Life has become increasingly harsh for Kabul's residents, and the city is a sad, tense place. It is in the midst of such angst that the House of Flowers exists.

Below is the letter that Mostafa wrote to MEPO supporters, telling of his brief but sweet visit with the children:

Dear Supporters of the House of Flowers,

During Nouroz , the Afghan/Iranian New Year which begins on March 21st, I was in Kabul on a medical mission, and during the trip I was able to spend some time with the 30 children of the House of Flowers. It had been a year since my last trip.

This time, I got to know a young and charming lady in the House, Wahida, a two and half year old girl who had joined the House with her two older sisters, Firouza (five years old) and Farida (eight years old). Wahida has attracted much positive attention from almost everybody in the House, even from the youngest children who are just barely older than her. Wahida has just started to learn a few songs and can count from one to five in English. She never fails to bring smiles to faces when she says anything, anything whatsoever.

Wahida with her brother.
