Seven Years and Counting...

The House of Flowers has now been open for seven and a half years, since the winter of 2002. While some children just came this past year, some have been with us since the very beginning, and many others for at least six years. We have watched them grow, learn, and mature, and now we often can’t believe that some of them are teenagers! The children’s teacher, Fatima, has become very technologically proficient, regularly sending emails and scanned letters from the children, making it easy to keep up with the goings-on at the House. Razia, the oldest girl, even has her own email address.

The children write letters and stories about what they have been doing, describing recent events at the House and sending thank you notes to people who send gifts.

The staff has often taken the initiative to arrange for activities such as outings and field trips. This shows the maturity and competence of the Afghan staff, who are amazing in their full dedication despite commuting circumstances that most of us simply could not imagine dealing with : traveling 2-3 hours in choking pollution and thick traffic either in several taxis or on a bicycle, going to and from work. We are so grateful to them.
